Childhood and Education
Rachel Carson was a writer, a scientist, and an ecologist who grew up in Springdale, Pennsylvania.
She was born on May 27, 1907. Her mother was a musician and a school teacher. As Rachel got older she wanted to be a writer. She published her first piece in a national children's magazine called "St. Nicholas Magazine" in September 1918.
She was a really smart sudent and impressed her teachers. In college, Rachel studied English, then changed her major to Biology at the Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She earned her masters degree in Creative Writing at John Hopkins University. She finished her postgraduate studies at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts.
